Set up Face ID

Before you can set up Face ID in 1Password, you’ll need to set up Face ID for your device. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Tap Settings > Security.
  3. Turn on Face ID.

Now you can use Face ID to unlock 1Password. But don’t forget your Master Password. Sometimes you’ll need to enter it instead of using Face ID.

Use Face ID

After setting up Face ID, open 1Password. If 1Password is locked, you can use Face ID instead of your Master Password. Raise your iPhone, and Face ID will detect your face and unlock 1Password.

Recover 1password Master Password

Sometimes you won’t see the prompt:

  • If you’ve canceled the Face ID prompt
  • If you’ve restarted your device

Depending on your settings, you might see the Face ID button below the Master Password field. Tap it and the prompt will appear.

Manage your settings

To change how often your Master Password is required instead of Face ID, go to Settings > Advanced > Security.

  • Require Master Password: If you want 1Password to require your Master Password instead of Face ID after restarting your device or after a specific amount of time, change this setting. By default, 1Password will not ask for your Master Password in those cases.

Get help

Sometimes you’ll need to enter your Master Password instead of using Face ID:

  • If your face isn’t recognized five times in a row
  • If you tapped Settings > Security > Lock Now
  • If you’re trying to change your Master Password
  • If you reset Face ID or set up an alternate appearance on your device
  • If Require Master Password is set to After Device Restart in Settings > Advanced > Security, and you’ve just restarted your device
  • If the amount of time in Settings > Advanced > Security > Require Master Password has elapsed
  • If your device’s battery is below 10%

If you still need help, follow these steps. Try again after each step:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of 1Password.
  2. Make sure that you are able to use Face ID to unlock your device.
  3. Turn off Face ID in 1Password > Settings > Security, then turn it back on again.
  4. Try resetting Face ID on your device. Open the Settings app and tap Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID. Then tap Set up Face ID to set it up again.

Your Emergency Kit is a safety net for accessing your account.

Your Emergency Kit is a PDF document with your account details and a place to write your Master Password. If you fill out your Emergency Kit and store it safely, it will allow you to access your 1Password account if you can’t sign in.

Get your Emergency Kit

1Password asks you to save your Emergency Kit when you create an account. Check your Downloads folder to see if you already have yours. You can get another copy of your Emergency Kit in some of the 1Password apps, or by signing in to your account on 1Password.com.

  1. Sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
  2. Click your name in the top right and choose My Profile.
  3. Click Save Emergency Kit and follow the onscreen instructions to save the PDF.

1Password for Mac

  1. From the Account menu choose your account > Get Emergency Kit.
  2. Click Save or Print.

1Password for Android

  1. Go to Settings > 1Password accounts, then choose your account.
  2. Tap View Emergency Kit, then tap Save.

Prepare your Emergency Kit

  • Print a copy to keep in a safe deposit box or with your passport or birth certificate.
  • Write your Master Password in at least one printed copy of your Emergency Kit.
  • Save it to your personal cloud storage, so you always have a digital copy available.
  • Give a copy to someone you trust, like your spouse or someone in your will.

Should I write down my Master Password?

Consider what would happen if you ever forgot it or how a loved one would access your account in an emergency. If you don’t write it down, it’s still important to keep a copy of your Emergency Kit, so you don’t lose your Secret Key.

Your Emergency Kit contains everything needed to sign in to your account on 1Password.com or in the apps:

  • Sign-in address. The web address you use to sign in to your account.
  • Email address. The email address you used to create your account.
  • Secret Key. A unique code which protects your data. Learn more.

  • Setup Code. A QR code that makes it easy to sign in on new devices.
